Why I teach The Positive Birth Program™

As a midwife of over 10 years, working in all areas of maternity I have seen it all. Women birthing beautifully, calmly and well supported and women who had no idea what was happening, why, having significant amounts of pain, intervention and less than ideal circumstances. Women – and their partners – who were scared, unsure, terrified even.

After many years of trying to conceive, IVF, miscarriages, surgeries and more I was, finally, pregnant with my first son. I knew how I wanted to birth. I knew how I didn’t want to birth. But I also knew it’s not always in our control. I knew how much the system can push certain interventions or procedures.

At work I’d heard the mention of hypnobirthing a bit, but wasn’t really sure about it. Honestly, it sounded a bit weird… A midwife who I had done much of my training with and deeply respected encouraged me to do a hypnobirthing course. So, partly out of professional curiosity and partly out of preparation for my own birth I did The Positive Birth Program with my slightly sceptical but supportive husband.

I LOVED it. I was shocked by how much of the course made perfect sense, how our bodies work, how our hormones work, how birth works. It also made sense of those really beautiful, calm births I’d seen as a midwife.

My husband also really enjoyed the course too, and we both loved that it gave him knowledge and tools to support me during labour. Looking back, I can say his support was so hugely beneficial in helping me through my labours.

I went on to have a beautiful forceps birth of my first son. I used only gas, until they gave a local pain black for the forceps, my labour progressed fairly quickly. His hand was up near his head (compound position) and after trying the ventouse a few times, forceps was the next option. I never, ever, would have said I wanted a forceps birth, but it was a BEAUTIFUL experience. I knew it was the best option with the circumstances at the time. Once his head was born, I got to reach down and bring him up onto my chest. One of the best moments of my life.

My second birth was a truly beautiful, ideal, calm waterbirth. My labour was quick, I didn’t even think I was in labour for most of it. I felt like a superwoman after his birth.

My births were different and were not perfect, but I LOVED them. I look back on them and feel so proud of how I was able to navigate them.

I want all women to feel this confident, empowered to make decisions, trusting in their body and having tools and techniques for birth. I truly believe every woman deserves to have this information before they birth.

So, I started teaching The Positive Birth Program.

I haven’t looked back since. I love helping women and couples prepare for their birth.

Seeing women go from feeling so anxious and unsure to being excited and feeling confident.

Seeing partners go from having no clue about birth and no idea what their role is to confidently knowing what they can do to support their partner and work as a team to bring their baby into the world.

Knowing the system women are birthing in, knowing it’s faults and limitations, plus is positives and how to get the most from the system is of huge advantage for my clients. I love providing couples with information to help them have conversations, advocate for themselves and know what they might expect to happen along the way.

I just absolutely love sharing the knowledge I have with couples, so they can have positive birth experiences.
